All of us at Nevill Holt Opera would like to congratulate our Founder Patron, David Ross, for his appointment as Chair of the Royal Opera House.
Through David’s support and vision, NHO has grown from its inception in 2013 to become a critically acclaimed opera festival with a community and education programme that impacts thousands of young people across the Midlands each year. In 2018 NHO celebrated a new permanent base with the opening of its beautiful theatre on the Nevill Holt Estate, winning the People’s Vote for the prestigious RIBA Stirling Prize and dubbed an “indisputable triumph” by The Daily Telegraph. As David takes on this new role at the ROH, the time is right for him to step back from Nevill Holt Opera.
We are delighted that Carl Ross will become NHO’s Patron with immediate effect, continuing his family’s support of NHO. An excellent musician himself, Carl has been highly involved with the work of NHO since it began – from performing in the operas to operating the lighting cues and more – and so understands the organisation intimately and is committed to supporting NHO’s growth and success in the future.
Nicholas Chalmers, NHO’s Artistic Director, commented: “Carl Ross has demonstrated his musicianship and talent on the Nevill Holt Opera stage on many occasions. He has sung in La bohème and Carmen and has performed as a pianist at various NHO events. Carl has a love for opera and the arts and we look forward to continuing his relationship with our company as Patron.
Since David Ross established Nevill Holt Opera in 2013, we have seen the company grow its educational reach, broaden its audience base, and establish its reputation for promoting and bringing the best young operatic talent to its beautiful new home in the East Midlands. David’s mission to support young people is at the core of all our activity, and he has enabled the company to transform the lives of many. His insistence on providing opportunity for all has been at the root of all we do at NHO and we wish him every success with the Royal Opera House.”
Annie Lydford, NHO’s Managing Director, added: “Since it began in 2013, Nevill Holt Opera has gone from strength to strength. It has been a pleasure to work alongside David since I joined NHO in January – his commitment to excellence is infectious and challenges us all to be ambitious and continue to raise the bar for what NHO can achieve.
It is fantastic now to have Carl on board as Patron, representing a fresh, new period for NHO and exciting times ahead. Carl’s appointment, as he approaches 18, reflects NHO’s commitment to developing a younger and more sustainable audience for opera, to ensuring that NHO continues to support the most talented young artists across the UK, and to working with our partners to provide young people across the Midlands with access to music making of the highest quality. We are all looking forward hugely to working with Carl.”
